A business events boom in South Australia rocketed Adelaide Convention Centre to its best year yet in 2022/2023, with the venue returning a $215 million record breaking economic benefit to the South Australian economy.
During the 12-month period from July 2022 through June 2023, Adelaide Convention Centre – South Australia’s home of business events – played host to 646 total events, welcoming more than 224,000 guests through its doors.
The venue’s business events calendar was highlighted by 81 major national and international conferences and exhibitions, attracting more than 36,000 interstate and international visitors to Adelaide and generating approximately 205,000 bed nights.
In good news for local industry and the visitor economy, the momentum is set to continue in the year ahead, with 79 major national and international business events already confirmed at Adelaide Convention Centre, many of which closely align to the state’s priority sectors.
Adelaide Convention Centre works in close partnership with the State Government and peak industry body, Business Events Adelaide, to attract major business events to South Australia.
Currently, the 13th Australasian Society for Breast Disease (ASBD) Scientific Meeting is underway at the Centre and due to wrap up tomorrow (16 September).
Other notable business events set to be held at the Centre in the coming months include:
- Australian International Education Conference (AIEC 2023), 10 - 13 October 2023
- World Urban Parks Congress (WUP 2023), 22 - 25 October 2023
- Sleep DownUnder 2023, 8 – 11 November 2023
- Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control International Conference (ACIPC), 12 - 15 November 2023
Beyond providing a financial windfall for the State’s visitor economy in 2022/2023, over the past year Adelaide Convention Centre continued to lead the way in sustainability, shining a spotlight on Adelaide as a vibrant, clean, green destination.
The Centre, which has a long-standing commitment to sustainability, was the world’s first convention centre to achieve EarthCheck Platinum certification for best practice in business and environmental sustainability (2018) and is right on the cusp of achieving EarthCheck’s coveted Master status – a 15-year commitment.
In its most recent EarthCheck audit, Adelaide Convention Centre demonstrated its ongoing sustainability leadership by being identified as the leader in the Australian business events industry when it comes to not only minimising waste to landfill, but also potable water consumption, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Adelaide’s reputation as a leading business events destination continues to grow from strength to strength, as reflected in Adelaide Convention Centre’s outstanding results.
When it comes to business events, Adelaide is certainly benefiting from not only the increased inventory of high-quality accommodation within the city centre, but also our city’s blossoming reputation as a clean, green destination, which has been identified as an increasingly important consideration amongst business events organisers.
Furthermore, Adelaide’s strong reputation for innovation, propelled by the ongoing development of Adelaide BioMed City and Lot Fourteen as key innovation and knowledge hubs, continues to be another major drawcard in attracting leading health, medical and innovation event organisers.
Business events not only provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase our city’s unrivalled business events capabilities and support the regions via delegate travel, but provide exciting opportunities for additional economic, professional and social legacies, which extend well beyond the life of the events to further advance and enrich our great state.
To this end, the importance and positive impact of hosting business events here in South Australia cannot be overstated. I congratulate the Adelaide Convention Centre team on a record year, and indeed, all who play important roles within our state’s vibrant business events sector.

We’re thrilled with the results achieved over the past year, and we are really encouraged by the future outlook, as our talented and committed team embraces a much more positive period for the business events industry.
Adelaide does business events so very well. It’s fantastic that our State Government is so attuned to the value of business events for both our city and the wider state, recognising the importance of their lasting legacies and strongly supporting their attraction.
The more events we host, the more opportunities we have to support not only the visitor economy, but our state’s priority sectors.
It’s also been really pleasing to see the impact and traction of both the Centre and our city’s sustainability commitment amongst event organisers. Our clients are highly motivated by our sustainability credentials, and it’s critical that we continue to go about our business sustainably, both in terms of supporting the environment and our local communities.
