Girls aged between eight and 15-years-old have attended the FIA Girls on Track event at the VAILO Adelaide 500, designed to build interest in, and awareness of, opportunities within the motorsport industry both on and off the track.

The more than 100 girls involved rotated through four sessions that saw them participate in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) and media workshops, a reaction and fitness challenge, and a garage walk.

The program is one of many initiatives the industry is pioneering to have greater female participation. By promoting an interest in STEMM subjects, it hopes to put inspired young girls in the driver’s seat, in control of their motorsport future.

Motorsport Australia has brought Girls on Track back for a second year, with the program also taking place as the iconic race returned to South Australia’s streets in 2022.

The 2023 event has been held within the BP Pavilion at the VAILO Adelaide 500.

Girls on Track is powerful both in terms of the brilliant experience girls have had, and in the message their involvement sends.

Seeing girls and women included in traditionally male-dominated sports and supported and celebrated to get involved at every level, all the way to the top of the sport they love – celebrated for their strength and talent – is powerful. It can be transformative in terms of the way girls and women and the roles they can play are seen – in sport and everywhere else.

It was excellent to see dozens of girls exploring every aspect of motorsport, thinking about the pathways into it and really excited about the opportunity they had to get involved. Thanks to everyone at Motorsport Australia for empowering the next generation of motorsport leaders.
