The ugly pedestrian airbridge spanning across the Adelaide Railway Station concourse has been removed, with the historic central balcony and lamps reinstated to return the iconic city landmark to its former glory.
The removal of the airbridge allows for unobstructed views along the grand concourse for the first time in almost 30 years.
The airbridge was originally built to provide a valet service between Adelaide Casino and the adjacent InterContinental Hotel but has sat obsolete since 2021 with the opening of Eos by SkyCity and the relocation of SkyCity’s valet service to the new Festival Car Park.
Installation of the replica heritage lamps marks the completion of a five-month restoration project to rejuvenate this historic city landmark.
Approximately 230,000 weekly rail commuters, plus many more casual visitors will be able to experience the station in its renewed splendour, marking a pivotal moment in the Adelaide Railway Station’s journey back to its former glory.
Built Pty Ltd was entrusted to complete the works having also recently restored the western and eastern façade. The majority of the balcony restoration works were undertaken at night to ensure uninterrupted operation of the station and its retail tenants, including The Guardsman bar and restaurant.
The restoration of the station forms an important part on the revitalisation of the Adelaide Riverbank precinct, which also includes the transformation of Festival Plaza into a vibrant destination.
