Release date: 18/10/23

The first annual Adelaide Film Festival begins today following the Malinauskas Labor Government’s record $4 million investment with a number of South Australian made films in the spotlight.

The Government committed at the election to making our state’s premier film festival an annual event with an additional $2 million over four years.

We have since committed to also providing an extra $2 million for the Adelaide Film Festival’s Investment Fund to support the creation of South Australian films and bolster our state’s growing screen sector over the same period.

The Adelaide Film Festival was the first Australian film festival to establish an investment fund. It has seeded and premiered over 150 projects including significant Australian films such as Talk to Me, I Am Woman and Hotel Mumbai over the past 20 years.

This year’s festival features more than 130 films from 43 countries with 27 world premieres and 38 Australian premieres taking place.

South Australia is home to a thriving film industry with this year’s festival opening and closing with two remarkable South Australian films – Kitty Green’s The Royal Hotel, filmed in South Australia and produced by the Academy Award-winning company See-Saw Film and My Name’s Ben FoldsI play piano, directed by Scott Hicks and supported by the Adelaide Film Festival’s Investment Fund.

South Australia is increasingly being recognised as a powerhouse of film and television production. We continue to secure major international projects and the Malinauskas Government is committed to supporting our screen sector to grow and succeed.

In addition to our investment in the Adelaide Film Festival, we dedicated an additional $5.2 million to a partnership between the South Australian Film Corporation and the ABC to provide South Australia with an ongoing pipeline of quality, Australian television production.

We also stepped in to secure the Mercury Cinema to support the next generation of South Australian film makers as it transitions to a new business model.

The Adelaide Film Festival runs from October 18 to 29 with more information available via https://adelaidefilmfestival.org/
