The outstanding achievements of SA Health’s brightest stars have been celebrated at the 10th annual SA Health Awards.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said the awards recognised those who have gone above and beyond to improve public health services for South Australians.

“All 30 finalists are a shining example of the inspirational staff, life-changing programs and services that are leading the way in healthcare across South Australia,” Minister Wade said.

“I would like to congratulate the winners for their hard work and exceptional commitment to caring for South Australians of all ages and for continuously improving healthcare across the state.

“In particular I would like to commend the staff at Northgate House for their diligence in caring for vulnerable older people in South Australia.”

SA Health’s Chief Executive, Dr Chris McGowan, said the SA Health Awards highlight the outstanding achievements of staff across the Local Health Networks.

“Congratulations to both the finalists and our winners who have shown exceptional efforts and skill in their work – each win is well deserved,” Dr McGowan said.

“I am proud to have a cohort of hard working staff with diverse skills and expertise that drives SA Health to excel in world class healthcare.”

Premier’s Health Award – Our Community

Innovative Approaches to Dementia Care

CHSALHN

The program has an innovative approach to dementia rehabilitation through Person Centred Care to reduce hospital admissions, improve wellness, support independence and prevent early admission into residential care.

 

Minister’s Innovation Award

Allied Health Orthopaedic Substitution Clinic Program

NALHN

The implementation of a successful strategy led by senior orthopaedic physiotherapists and senior orthopaedic podiatrists has been established for NALHN patients not requiring surgery to reduce the time people are waiting for treatment or surgery.

 

Out of Hospital Strategies and Care

Viral Hepatitis Nurse-led Community-based Hepatitis C Treatment Service

CALHN

CALHN viral hepatitis nurses have developed innovative models of care to treat patients safely and efficiently in the community through education, diagnostic testing, and community clinics. As a result, the proportion of patients who started treatment in the community substantially increased between 2016 and 2018.

 

Enhancing Hospital Care

OPAL & RCOT – Comprehensive Care of the Older Person

SALHN

Since August 2017 Older Persons Assessment and Liaison Service (OPAL) and Residential Care Outreach Team (RCOT) have improved the care of over 2,700 South Australians over 80 years old. Length of stay has been reduced by two days by improving investigations and care planning and streamlining admissions.

 

Building and Strengthening Partnerships

Healthy Workers Healthy Futures Initiative

DHW

The Healthy Workers Healthy Futures initiative is a unique partnership approach to improve South Australian’s health and wellbeing in the workplace by supporting workplaces to implement policies, change environments and offer healthy choice programs. This initiative helps prevent chronic disease by targeting smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol and physical inactivity.

 

Excellence in Non-Clinical Services

NALHN Pocket DTC

NALHN

The NALHN Pocket DTC Smartphone App is an Australian first and an innovative approach to support medication use and provide safer, better patient care. Since its launch in November 2017, there have been over 1000 downloads with strong interest from other hospitals nationally and internationally.

 

Young Professional of the Year

Victoria Fitton – Nurse Unit Manager

CALHN

Nurse Unit Manager of the Cardiothoracic Wing at The Royal Adelaide Hospital, Victoria has provided valuable leadership and been influential in enhancing patient care and lifting team morale through a number of initiatives which she has developed and implemented.

 

Excellence and Innovation in Aboriginal Health

Integrating Care – Closing the Gap on Diabetes

NALHN

The Watto Purrunna team has initiated a client-centred diabetes clinic resulting in clients no longer needing to attend hospital-based clinics. The clinic is conducted in a culturally safe environment, enabling access to same day, holistic team-care at one site.

 

Improving Safety and Quality

Northgate House

NALHN

Northgate House is a statewide service providing specialist extended care to older people with clinical needs resulting from severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and/or mental illness. Emerging from a period of intense and highly public service reform, Northgate House is an exemplar of new directions and standards in care for older people with complex needs and their families.

 

Partnering with Consumers, Carers and Our Community

Consumer and Community Engagement Strategy 2015 – 2018

WCHN

The Women’s and Children’s Network developed an organisational strategy to improve consumer engagement and implementation over a 36-month period has resulted in 5000 combined hours of direct consumer engagement, 216 consumer representatives involved and 250 quality improvements.
